Coming from an academic background, I get really annoyed when I see sneaky/poor research being done. Not to mention research that is vaguely threatening to the groups it purports to be "trying" to "understand".

Please read this post by the mods of kink_bingo, and don't do that survey that's going around. The one with this banner:



I repeat, don't do that survey! And if you have already, it sounds like there's a way that you can go back in and change/delete all of your answers. ETA: It appears that they took the survey down to "edit" and "improve" it. Bullshit. Either way, don't take it when it inevitably re-surfaces.

When I think of how many people have gone through hell to get their thesis/dissertation research projects approved by the IRB, and then I see sloppy, bad research like this ... Grrrrr.

Exactly. The IRB is there to protect the participants (well, and technically the researcher as well, but ya know) and to me it seems like the new way to "get around it" is to put up a survey on the internet. Definitely does not make me happy. It's really worrying, actually.
